Anna always knew she wanted to get married at Blue Hill Stone Barns. She grew up in Irvington and had visited Blue Hill many times to walk the grounds and dine at the restaurant. It was the perfectly fitting for her and David to have a Blue Hill at Stone Barns wedding over Memorial Day weekend.
Anna and David chose a classic and timeless invitation suite from Bella Figura with letterpressed details, cotton paper and a shiny gold bevelled edge. Anna wore a simple and elegant Vera Wang gown with the most stunning veil embroidered with roses. The bridesmaids were in sage green silk dresses from Cloud Hunter that complimented the spring setting at the farm. Anna carried a bouquet of white peonies, pale blush ranunculus, spirea, hellebores, lilac and garden roses. David wore a boutonniere of local lily of the valley with his tuxedo. The couple had their first look at the ivy covered shed behind the restaurant and exchanged their personal vows privately there as well.
The weather had been forecasting clear skies all morning, but things can change rapidly through the day during those warmer spring months. We spend a lot of time scanning multiple weather apps and looking at the sky for outdoor weddings! The ceremony was initially setup in the courtyard, but as Anna and David were signing the ketubah, the rain started to fall. We had to move everything quickly under the cafe awning to keep the ceremony guests dry. Poppies and Posies and the team at Blue Hill at Stone Barns did such an amazing job in swiftly moving the ceremony setup for 160 people. Guests were able to keep dry and the ceremony was still outside (albeit under the cafe roof)! The Blue Hill at Stone Barns team used large umbrellas to create a tunnel for the bridal party to walk across the courtyard for the processional. They even lowered the umbrellas one by one after the bride had walked past. It looked so dramatic and special! Anna and David were married under a wooden chuppah decorated with seasonal branches, white delphinium and stock.
By the end of the ceremony the rain had stopped, so everyone was able to enjoy the courtyard and the restaurant terrace during the cocktail reception. Guests were invited into the restaurant and we used the main dining room and the terrace facing the vegetable fields for the reception. In addition to the farm fresh passed hors d’oeuvres, we also had the bakery experience. It is one of my favourite additions! There is nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread. Once you have tasted bread at Blue Hill at Stone Barns it really spoils you for so many other bread options! Along with the bread, they also included fresh ricotta and charcuterie. The hand calligraphed escort cards were arranged on the farm table in the middle of the restaurant. Guests were able to pickup their cards while enjoying the wonderful food and drinks.
For the yichud, Anna and David were brought to the bridal suite to have a private moment to themselves and to sample some of the delicious hors d’oeuvres and specialty cocktails. When they were ready to join their guests, we brought them through the Blue Hill at Stone Barns kitchen and the staff banged on pots and pans to celebrate the newly weds!
After cocktails, guests walked across the courtyard along a lantern lined pathway to the upper hayloft for dinner. The florals were organic, but tailored arrangements in elegant glass footed vases. They included show stopping peonies, ranunculus, spirea, roses, hellebores, cosmos, frittalaria and tulips. The Eleven Band provided the music for the evening and we kicked everything off with Anna and David’s first dance to “Love Is Here To Stay” by Frank Sinatra. This was followed by the horah which is always such a fun way to start a party!
Dinner featured caviar and brioche, Maine lobster, and shortrib of beef, along with wine pairings. The wedding cake (also by Blue Hill at Stone Barns) was vanilla and strawberry. Everyone had such a good time dancing the night away to the music from the super fun band. The after party continued back in the main restaurant, where we had a DJ from 74 Events provide the late night music. Passed desserts from Blue Hill kept the crowd well fueled.
Sometimes life throws you a curveball. Anna and David didn’t let those raindrops get in their way of having a truly wonderful celebration of their love with their closest friends and family at Blue Hill.
